001. Now Everything Is New
[ Well that's new.
He'd been in the movie theater, watching aimlessly with no real need to other than a pull to do so, and suddenly he's aware. Aware that his memories are gone, aware of the whole being dead thing... all of it. It's disorienting of course, but he manages to collect himself, as the movie screen quickly flashes someone playing a lyre. That's... odd but he doesn't think on it at all, there's bigger fish to fry.
He makes it outside and stretches his arms, before also giving his wings a stretch to make sure they actually still move. ]
Well, that's good at least.
[ Providing that didn't knock anyone over or anything he's going to start investigating around Limbo, trying to figure out what this place is and what's going on. He doesn't start talking to most people right away (unless approached of course), instead preferring to observe first.
...His eyes keep wandering though. There's so many things here that he's pretty sure he's never seen before, and it's so interesting... It's not unlikely to find him staring intently at some of the things in places like the conbini, wondering what it does or how it might taste.... ]

conbini
[A teenage girl folds her arms and looks him over with a frown.]
i'm here bitch
Oh! Wait just a second!
[ She's just been out on a wander herself, so she comes hurrying over, a little wide-eyed. ]
Have you just awakened?
no subject
Is that what this is called? This sensation of feeling like coming to one's senses?
Because if so then yes, I suppose I have.
no subject
[ He looks towards her and then back at the confections with even MORE curiosity. ]
How could chocolate be... "cake flavored" though? Is it not normally the other way around?
[ Cake isn't a flavour, cake IS flavoured what the fuck ]
no subject
no subject
[ He's just gonna... pick up the pack of birthday cake flavored ones and take them with him. He's very curious now! ]
And it appears that I have, yes. Seems I may be a little late to the party though, if there's already others.
no subject
no subject
...Beast, apparently. The pleasure is mine, my lady.
[ He leans over in a bit of a half bow, mindful not to knock anything over with his wings. ]
Quite the pair of names we have though, I must say.
no subject
no subject
...Your... Majesty? Truly?
[ lmao what the fuck ]
no subject
no subject
He's going to remember this for later. ]
How strange. With these names being the only knowledge we have of ourselves I presume there must be some reason, but whether we ever discover that reason is a whole other matter.

[ She tries to add the number up in her head, but she's too frazzled to count all the new faces properly. There's been so many of them but this is the first time she's run into one of them by herself without someone else doing at least a bit of the legwork beforehand, so she's finding herself in a bit of a tizzy. ]
N–Never mind. I... think we should find somewhere to sit down so I can start explaining things to you.
[ Straight to the point. Attagirl, Rei. ]
no subject
[ he will follow! ]
no subject
[ He shrugs ]
Aw well. Gaius was not built over night, I'm sure whatever the reasons are they'll come to us in time.
no subject
Well– first of all, I have a question. Do you understand where you are and what's happened to you?
[ The others seem to have so far, but she doesn't feel quite certain enough yet to assume it's going to be the case for every new Eidolon. ]
no subject
I understand that I am dead, though how I died is yet another mystery to me.
As to the where I can only presume this is the after life, correct?
no subject
[ No matter how accepting everyone's been, she still can't help but feel a twinge of discomfort. Life comes to an end eventually, but there's still something sad about imagining what lives these people might have left behind. Perhaps it's some sort of odd kindness that they all remember so little. ]
All the others here are dead as well. Some of us know why we're here and where we are – we've come to our senses, like you said. But most of them just... carry on, as if nothing's happened.
no subject
I see. I thought it a bit strange when observing them before— they appear to be going through the motions of living rather than actually being alive.
The real burning question though is why? Why are we “awakened” as you put it? I imagine you have some answers to that.
no subject
... I'm sorry I don't have many answers. Outside of my duty, I really don't know very much about what's going on here.
no subject
He reaches out and puts a hand gently on her shoulder. ]
That is quite all right- do not worry about it. I’m sure with that many of us here the answers will come in time.
What sort of “duty” would you have in a place like this though?
no subject
Well, I'm an Executor. At least... that's what I remember, anyway. It's really the only thing I remember at all. You see, um...
[ Okay, now she has to go back to the start. ]
The way Purgatory usually functions... there's something at the very bottom called the Cogs of Renewal. Passing through them means you've freed yourself of the burden of your sins and you can pass onto your next life. But something's happened – they're... broken, somehow, I think. And because of that, all the souls who should be moving on are trapped here.
And people who don't move on stop being human souls. They lose the parts of their humanity they've managed to hold onto and become something called a Revenant. They're dangerous and they can be violet and when they turn like that... there's nothing we can do to help them anymore, aside from keeping them from hurting anybody.
That is our duty, as Executors.
no subject
I... see.
[ ... ]
...I beg your pardon my lady, but if I may interrupt for a moment...
What... is this “purgatory” you speak of?
[ the fuck is a catholic ]
no subject
Ah. ]
It's.... hold on, you really have no idea what Purgatory is?
[ EVERYONE ELSE SEEMED TO JUST GET IT??? ]
no subject
no subject
[ SIGH. ]
Purgatory is just... here. The place we are. It's where souls wait after their deaths to be reborn into their next lives. We pass through Purgatory to let go of the sins accumulated from our previous lives and to go onto our next ones with a clean slate.
no subject
[ He’s learning things! Fun! ]
Anyway, as you were saying... Executors?
no subject
... well, right now we're not really doing a lot of fighting... we're mostly just trying to get to a point where we feel confident that we could.
no subject
no subject
[ That’s where he sees this explanation going at least. ]
no subject
[ So forget them, I guess. ]
no subject
[ Wow dog that's harsh you were also one of those "empty shells" until an hour ago you know. ]
So, let's cut to the chase then. Am I also to become one of these "Executors" now?
no subject
You-- you could, but you don't have to. [ at this point, she's pretty much given up on trying to talk people out of it but that doesn't mean she's going to stop warning them. ] It could be dangerous and I don't want anyone to feel like they're being forced to do it.
no subject
Oh? But is it not advantageous for you to have as much assistance as possible?
no subject
[ she sounds more assured of that than she has anything else in this entire conversation. ]
no subject
You are a kind girl.
And because of that kindness, I think I would like to take on this executor duty, actually.
no subject
I'll only ask once.
[ mostly because, for reasons she's still yet to fathom, everyone else has jumped at the chance. ]
no subject
As your elder it’s the least I can do.
[ Shut the fuck up old man. ]
no subject
[ With the air of someone who's getting very used to doing this, Rei pulls back her sleeve a little to uncover the mark on her wrist. Then she extends her hand to the older man and just for a blink, the world around them seems to grind to a halt.
And then with a flash of golden light, everything snaps back to normal – as normal as Purgatory gets, anyway.
Contract established. ]
time for the heartbreaking memoria
He had closed his eyes when the light flashed, but when he reopens them... for a moment the girl in front of him is gone.
In her place though is someone who sort of looks like her, but the long white hair is now short, the blue eyes are red, and the skin even more pale. At the sight of this person his heart begins to ache, filled with love and pride, as well as an immeasurable sadness and sense of guilt.
It's the face of his child. He knows this in an instant even though he didn't even remember them just moments before.
And then, with a blink, the face of said child is gone, fading away and back into Rei. A hallucination then? Was that it? But the pain he now feels remains...
He doesn't say anything but he hunches over a little, clutching his heart. From just that and the look on his face it's clear something is up. ]
Hate this, thanks!
Um... Excuse me? [ she reaches out to carefully touch his shoulder. ] Are you alright?
no subject
[ He straightens back up and runs a hand through his hair with a fine. ]
It appears as if that little ritual you did triggered a memory of sorts... or something like that at least. That's all.
no subject
... well. That seems to be how this works, at least. So you're not alone in starting to remember things.
[ She's... helping? ]
