The Heist

They had been investigating for weeks, planning and setting up for what seemed like forever. But now was the time for everything to go into action. One team dressed up and settled into various undercover positions in the casino- including Lion himself over at the slots, in case he needed to call Greta and let her know someone was calling her out. Though hopefully, word of mouth would find her first.

Another at the bank, Mona using her Executor weapon to prove they could break-in at any time. It was all or nothing now- either way Greta was about to learn there were way more Executors than she previously assumed.

That is, if the Executors were right in their assumptions. But after last time who knows what might happen...
mementomoritz: try again? (test results are inconclusive)

Hm... [Medic, being herself, gives this due consideration instead of, you know. Actually asking why Wolfsbane is mentioning this, at all.] It's hard to say- I think if I abandoned reason, I wouldn't be able to tell.

I'd think everything I was doing was right, no matter how out of control it got, wouldn't I?
emberserker: Arms crossed, standing by a pillar. (quick comment)

[personal profile] emberserker 2021-05-21 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
...I suppose you're right about that. I simply thought there might be a point where one knows what one is doing, but no longer cares.
mementomoritz: hmmm... (hypothesis)

[personal profile] mementomoritz 2021-05-21 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[She nods thoughtfully.] Maybe there is... There's definitely a difference between knowing something is true and feeling like it is.

So even if you knew something wasn't worth it anymore, you might not feel that way.
emberserker: Arrogant glare. (i'm the greatest)

[personal profile] emberserker 2021-05-21 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
...ugh, who knows. We ought to be happy for the victory and preparing for the next one.
mementomoritz: yes??? (what if science?)

[personal profile] mementomoritz 2021-05-21 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thinking about things usually is how I prepare! ...Also, stocking up on supplies. I'm thinking of giving everyone a first aid kit in case they end up in a group without any healers.

[She loves you all but you people have the self-preservation instinct of wet paint.]
emberserker: Self-satisfied. (because i can)

[personal profile] emberserker 2021-05-21 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Proactive as always. We've also got to predict what Greta will turn into, given her mental state indicates she'll do the same thing Esme did, and how best to counter it. Not to mention whatever else lives down there.
mementomoritz: maybe both! (new toys? new friends?)

[personal profile] mementomoritz 2021-05-21 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost certainly, yes! [Lady turning into a murdermonster? Hey, it's not gonna get her down. Cheerful as always.] Esme's weapon of choice was poison, and her transformation reflected that, but I don't think Greta favored any one particular form of violence that we found out about...

She seemed pretty willing to attack Ruin, though, so we shouldn't assume she's not used to fighting.
emberserker: Anna sitting like she's on a throne. (now all i need is a treasure)

[personal profile] emberserker 2021-05-21 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
She usurped the Phantom fairly recently, as it goes, didn't she? And the contest Esme took part in was some time ago, but still in unliving memory. I have to wonder if that's going to be a theme.
mementomoritz: leave her out of the yearbook (class photo day)

[personal profile] mementomoritz 2021-05-21 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true! That has the potential to be important if the trend continues, yes... I guess all of the current Authorities would have to have come to power after the Cogs of Renewal were broken, wouldn't they? Since Executors like Rei could have travelled freely between the Layers before then, and she didn't seem to expect to find anyone claiming that power like this.

[She pauses, a thought occurring.] Although... given how scattered Rei's memories are, she could definitely have met an Authority before and just not know it.
emberserker: Eyes closed, preparing to fight. (just a moment)

[personal profile] emberserker 2021-05-22 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's true itself, of course. But even so, one would at least expect her to expect Authorities like these if that's how they usually operate. I suppose it likely comes back to this "little bird" we keep hearing about.
mementomoritz: hmmm... (hypothesis)

[personal profile] mementomoritz 2021-05-22 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder... [Medic looks quietly, deeply pensive.] This person, the one who told the Authorities about Executors- they'd have to be someone who could travel between different Layers freely, right? Even if there were fewer Revenants before the Cogs stopped working, a lot fewer, that would be dangerous for someone without the ability to fight back. And they seem to have known a lot about the inner workings of Purgatory...

[She looks over at Wolfsbane, expression solemn.]

The more I think about it, the more I think Rei wasn't the only Executor still left after all.
emberserker: Creepy reassurance. (trust me (do not))

[personal profile] emberserker 2021-05-22 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a sensible theory. So presumably, she betrayed Rei, scattered her memories, and went to sabotage the cause of the Executors. Likely for the same reason Esme and Greta had: to remain herself, at any cost.
mementomoritz: that someone is me (did somebody say science?)

[personal profile] mementomoritz 2021-05-23 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That does seem pretty likely, which is very unfortunate. [She hopes there's a less depressing explanation, but it doesn't look good.]

It's still just a theory right now, we can't be sure... but we should definitely be ready to fight more than just the Authorities. Just in case.
emberserker: Stern look. (this is why you're wrong)

[personal profile] emberserker 2021-05-23 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't suppose we're telling Rei about this. Until we've got more evidence, it would just be a bother to her, and she might falter in leading us properly.
mementomoritz: much (now this won't hurt)

[personal profile] mementomoritz 2021-05-23 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...We aren't? [Wolfsbane, please remember you're talking to someone with extremely dubious social skills. She was absolutely intending to tell Rei about this, and not doing so hadn't even crossed her mind until you suggested it might be a problem.]

[She's bad at dishonesty, okay.]

Maybe we should try asking her what she thinks about our "birdie", first? She might have already figured out it's a possibility...
emberserker: Eyes closed, preparing to fight. (just a moment)

[personal profile] emberserker 2021-05-23 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That's as wise as anything else. And if it twigs something in that scrambled memory of hers, it might lead us to something else.
