Superbia Intro Log ... ?
![]() With the dragon of greed thoroughly slain, the Executors are at last free to escape the sensory hell of the Avaritia Underside and descend to the next Layer. There's still sound and chatter, of course, but compared to where you've been spending all your time until now. Welcome to Superbia. And make yourself comfortable... because now that you've arrived, the stairs that guided you down here have disappeared and you won't be leaving any time soon. Feel free to use this arrival log to chronicle your initial misadventures in the Pride Layer of Purgatory. As noted in the location page, several locations will require further investigation if you'd like to get some information on them, so get investigating! Drop a comment down to the Investigation Request subheader if you'd like to explore. Get out there and have fun! ... is anybody else feeling some deja vu? | |

So yeah, Sword will extend a hand towards the butterfly.
1/3
... It's only when it gets closer that you realize it isn't a butterfly at all. It's something strange and broken crammed into the shape of a butterfly. Its wings are fractured and cracking apart and just looking at it feels ugly and wrong.
But before you can withdraw, the butterfly lands lightly on Sword's hand.
And a moment later, both Sword and Phoenix see–

Or rather... the view that you see is so unchanging, that your eyes have simply ceased to take it in. It doesn't matter whether your eyes are open or closed, you know it by heart. You have always known it by heart. You will always know it by heart.
Crowds of faceless, nameless people pass you by. None of them see a thing at all, least of all you. They shuffle along, lost in their memories or otherwise numb to what goes on around them. You wished you were like them, once. You remember wishing to be numb, too.
There is no word for what you feel in its place, now. Duller and colder than anguish. Deeper and more all consuming than despair. It is isolation, resignation and the horror of having given up long ago but knowing that even when you give up, it will not end. You know it will never end.
You want so badly for it to end.
You do not know when it was you began to want that. You do not remember when you realized you would never be able to escape from this place. The years are like water and you are drowning all alone at the bottom of the ocean.
Please.
It doesn't matter who.
Just, anybody. Please, save me.
"Hello?"
For a moment, the world seems to stop moving.
In the crowds of formless people shuffling on through Purgatory, someone has stopped. A girl. Her eyes are bright and almost alive and as she stares right towards you, you realize... she sees you.
She begins to move towards you. You want to recoil, but you can't make yourself move.
You and the girl stand face to face. An eternity and no time at all passes.
And then she reaches out to take your hand.
"Are you alright?"
Something breaks inside of you. The water of a stagnant ocean suddenly pulls back and a tidal wave roars through.
You don't even realize that you had begun to cry until the girl throws her arms around you in a tight, desperate hug.
"It's okay! It's okay! I'm here now!"
I'm here, she says.
For the rest of your endlessly long existence, you will wonder if this girl ever truly understands the gift she had given you in that moment.

When Phoenix and Sword come to their senses, the butterfly is gone.
