It comes to you suddenly, at the end of an unravelling thread of thought. A sudden, piercing sense of wrongness stops you in your tracks and sends you tumbling through rapidfire questions that you realize you have no answer for. How long have you been here? How long have you been doing the same things, over and over, blindly going through the motions of a routine? Just who are you, anyway?

Questions beget more questions and answers prove illusive until you arrive at the only things you know for certain: the first is that this place is Purgatory.

The second is that you're here because you're dead.

Oddly, this doesn't feel like a surprise of any sort. You don't remember how or why it happened, but it did and that's that. It feels rather as though you've been slapped awake and everything around you has come into sharp focus. You're in Limbo, where you've been wandering since you arrived here in Purgatory alongside all the other mindless souls who are acting out what little they remember of their original lives.

Still lingering is that horrible sense of something being terribly wrong. It hasn't dissipated with your realization of the truth – if anything, it's intensified. There's no way to tell what it is, but there's something going on here.

Maybe you should investigate – or at least see if there's anyone else here who's had the same realization as you...

[ That sounds...right? It sounds at least somewhat correct, so they nod. Yes, they feel like they should help, even if it might be difficult.

Heroic, though...They're not sure. There's some uncertainty about the word. They don't know where it comes from, like most things. ]

« You are also heroic? »

[ She did say she understood how they felt. That strikes a chord in them, somehow...the yearning to be understood. ]

[seasharp]

Huh? [Oh, she did kind of imply that, didn't she?] Well, hm... Is it okay to describe myself like that, I wonder? I don't wanna sound conceited or anything.

[A hero, though... She doesn't know why, but she really likes the sound of that.]

But, wanting to help people and save those in need... Hm, it just feels right! So I guess so, yeah!

[beknights]

[ It feels reassuring, somehow, seeing someone else reaffirm themselves in front of them.

They incline their head in a supportive sort of nod. They think it's perfectly fine to be whatever you want to be. ]

« Then both of us are. »

[ There's almost unease in them, as they sign the words. Are they supposed to do this, to affirm that they might have something in common with another? But at the same time, it's only logical to acknowledge such a connection, isn't it?

They let none of that inner conflict show. It's far easier to pull off with the conspicuous lack of conventional facial expressions. ]

[Ariel definitely notices nothing amiss, she's just grinning brightly.]

Like two peas in a pod, huh? Well then, nice to meet you, fellow hero!

[And she just kind of... pats them on the arm? It's meant to be a supportive gesture.]

[beknights]

[ They look down at her when she pats their arm. Even brief contact is enough to notice that they tense when they're touched, but it's not something that's born out of wariness or fear; they simply don't seem to understand the purpose of the gesture.

They do, however, give her another affirmative nod. If only all interactions with people could be this easy. ]

So, did you just, um... What's the right way to say it, I wonder? "Wake up", maybe?

I only just remembered I'm dead, anyway. Is it the same for you?

[beknights]

[ That gets two quick nods. It feels a little impolite just to leave it at that, though, so after a moment, they raise their hand to sign. Their fingers move slowly and carefully, as if they're thinking hard about what they're saying. ]

« Yes.
I do not remember
much else though.
Is it the same for you? »

[seasharp]

Mm, pretty much. I mean, I guess I was going to school... maybe? [She just kind of, pulls on her skirt a little, for emphasis.] But I don't remember attending or what school it was. I'm just pretty sure this is a school uniform.

[Heck, maybe even that's wrong and she was wearing it for some other reason. Who knows. Maybe it was just cosplay.]

So I can't even properly introduce myself or anything. It's a little awkward, huh?
