There's still sound and chatter, of course, but compared to where you've been spending all your time until now. Welcome to Superbia. And make yourself comfortable... because now that you've arrived, the stairs that guided you down here have disappeared and you won't be leaving any time soon. [Not expecting the cheerful greeting, Amber finds himself briefly caught off guard before he inclines his head politely enough, reaching out to take her hand as it's offered.]

Amber. ...and thanks for not laughing, by the way.

I wasn't actually sure what the funny part was, and it would have felt weird to ask everyone else why they were laughing. [Just... admitting that with no shame whatsoever.] I miss the joke a lot, though, so I'm used to that!

[Look, she knows she has terrible social skills, okay. She's remembered enough to figure that out.]

If you ever need to get them to leave you alone, though, try just talking about how we're dead until they get too confused and wander off. That usually works for me.

Yeaah I...guess that'd probably do it, huh?

[He shakes his head a little, deciding it's best not to harp on why those kids decided he was the target of ridicule of the day. It could have been any number of things, honestly. From his name, to what he said, to the way he looks. He doesn't care to dwell on it.

Instead, he wants to focus on other, more interesting things. More important things.]

How did...you know I was one of you guys? I didn't really say anything unusual, did I?

[Welp, that's helpful.]

You seemed noticeably more lucid than most Specters, so I suspected you might be waking up, but there was really no way to be sure with such limited data. But if you were a Specter the note would have just seemed like nonsense anyway, so I thought I might as well take the chance.

You can't get anything done without taking a few risks, right?

[Such a reassuring attitude to have in a doctor...]

[Well, that certainly is one way to handle things. More than a bit risky, he might add, but he can respect that to a degree. Clearly she has enough knowledge about the way things work in this place that she was able to pinpoint a difference in him to begin with, so...why not see for herself if her theory is true?]

Yeah, as far as I know I'm...pretty recently "awakened" to this whole thing. I'm guessing it's been a lot longer for you, though.

Three whole layers worth! Four, if you count this one. I've been keeping track of more exact times in my notes, but things were a little vague before I managed to get a working clock, so that's not an exact measure.

[The part where the day-night cycle is apparently optional didn't help, either.]

[There's a slow, dawning excitement that spreads across Amber's face when she says that.]

So you're a scientist. I think we're going to get along juuust fine.

Yep! [New science friend? New science friend.] I'm a specialist in biology and medicine, but I've also made significant progress in botanical and zoological research!

You talked about alchemy, so I'm guessing you're more focused on chemical engineering?

[She doesn't know your world's academia, she doesn't want to assume.]

Precisely! Alchemy as a study is still in the process of getting traction in Corona but trust me, it’s getting there. You would not believe the advances we- well, I- have been working on!

I just uhh…can’t remember quite all of them….yet.

[Medic nods with vigorous sympathy.]

I know what that feels like! With the gaps in my memories, half of what I'm working with could be years out of date and I'd have no idea, it's terrible!

Not to mention all the new discoveries that the living must be making while we're gone... I hope someone shows up with a scientific journal when they die. Maybe if they get buried with it or something.

Sorry if this is blunt, but- do...you remember how you died?

No, and I'm extremely interested in figuring out how it could have happened.

[Not even just in terms of wanting to remember, she's also surprised it was even physically possible, given the healing powers she remembers having.]

Of course! Anything that could get past my regenerative capacity is intriguing enough to warrant further study.

So far my two major theories are the use of overwhelming immediate force, something that could just immediately annihilate me without having the chance to heal myself- or some kind of nullification ability that kept me from being able to heal at all.

The possibilities are fascinating! [...Well, you can't say she doesn't know how to find a silver lining.]
